When people think of phosphate, they often think of phosphate fertilizers, but may not realize that today’s phosphate uses include livestock feed supplements and consumable products such as vitamins, soft drinks, insecticides, detergents, and healthcare products, to name a few.
Phosphate mining began in the early 1900’s with production rapidly increasing during World War II. Once phosphate rock is mined, it is transported to a processing plant in which water is used for separation of phosphate from clay, sand, and other rock particles. The majority of phosphate recovered over the years has been used for phosphate fertilizers but with the growth in agriculture in emerging markets around the globe, phosphate consumption is on the increase, requiring more efficient phosphate processing systems.
With over 35 years of proven success, FLSmidth specializes in systems and equipment in phosphate processing and phosphoric acid production and most recently developed the fluosilicic treatment plant (FSA). The FSA Plant neutralizes the fluosilicic acid by producing a high solids slurry that can be blended with the gypsum from the plant. This process is based on proprietary Dorr-Oliver Eimco MaxR™ technology.
FLSmidth Minerals Italy is completing shipment of a complete FSA plant and 12 hemihydrate (HH) phosphoric acid horizontal belt filters destined for Litwin Switzerland’s Ma’Aden plant in Saudi Arabia, which will be the biggest integrated phosphoric acid production site in the world.
The plant located in Ras Al Zawr will process 2.5 million tonnes per year of phosphate coming from the Ma’Aden mine located in Al Jalamid near the northern border with Jordan. The phosphate concentrate will be processed in a fertilizer production facility consisting ?in phosphoric acid plant, a sulfuric acid plant, and ammonia plant, a diammonium phosphate DAP granulation plant and desalination plant. The project is scheduled to be finished by 2012.
