India’s largest iron ore producer orders crushing plant

NMDC Limited is developing a new iron ore mine at Kumaraswamy in the Indian state of Karnataka. FLSmidth has been awarded a contract for a significant portion of this project, viz. the iron ore crushing plant with a capacity of 1,800 tph

Under this contract FLSmidth will provide design and engineering in addition to supplying and delivering the necessary equipment and facilities. It will also be responsible for the electrical work, the civil and structural work and installation and commissioning of the plant. By choosing FLSmidth as One Source for the entire crushing plant, the customer benefits from reduced delivery time and optimised equipment performance.

The scope of equipment supplies includes:

  • A gyratory crusher
  • An apron feeder
  • A belt conveyor
  • Two scalping screens
  • A secondary cone crusher

FLSmidth Group CEO comments: “This is our first iron ore crushing order on a turnkey basis in India. It includes a gyratory crusher, a key piece of equipment in our portfolio.”

The gyratory crusher is characterised by a high throughput capacity, which makes it specifically suitable for large capacity mining projects. Moreover, it plays an important part in FLSmidth’s ‘pit to product’ concept for the minerals industry.

The customer, NMDC Limited, is a state-owned company and has been a leading player in India’s minerals sector for the past five decades. India’s leading iron ore producer and exporter, it also explores and produces a great number of other minerals. NMDC currently produces around 30 million tpy of iron ore from three fully mechanised mines and is expanding production capability to reach around 50 million tpy by 2014-15.
