Protecting the environment is a priority for FLSmidth so when asked to conduct an in-depth study regarding tailings management for Karara Iron Ore in Western Australia, FLSmidth jumped at the chance to be involved.

Once the study was complete, FLSmidth was able to offer a custom designed solution that ultimately will deliver significant environmental benefits from reducedwater usage to less potential for groundwater contamination.

The proposed solution once again established FLSmidth as a world leader within the stacking system technology and as a forerunner of the tailings stacking trend. In January of 2012, FLSmidth signed a contract with Bis Industries Ltd., a company of Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co. (KKR), to supply material handling equipment to the iron ore mine owned by Karara Mining Ltd some 200 km east of Geraldton, Australia.

The contract comprises an iron ore tailings stacking system including a RAHCO® mobile stacking system with a capacity of 2,850 tph. The technology which FLSmidth provides introduces a process that enables dewatered tailings material to be conveyed and stacked rather than pumped. This process allows our customer to utilise a smaller footprint, decrease environmental exposure, re-use much of their process water, and reduce operating costs.
