Luis Goyena, who is called “Lucho” among his friends and colleagues is the Customer Service Manager for FLSmidth Peru. He has been part of the FLSmidth family since 2008.
ON THE JOB
He is in a strategic position within the organisation because he is responsible for providing our customers with the best service possible for their projects so their work can be achieved in optimal technical and economical conditions.
Mining in Peru is booming and it is expected that within the next three years, there will be an investment of over USD 4,000 million in the development of new projects. FLSmidth will be part of this growth, not only as a supplier of equipment but as a provider of services for the completion of these future projects. As a service provider, FLSmidth has signed contracts with Chinalco for the Toromocho copper mine in Junin and with Xstrata for the Antapaccay copper mine in Cuzco. FLSmidth will provide support during construction and commissioning stages.
Lucho has also been involved in the conceptual design of the Arequipa Supercenter which will start operations during the second half of 2012. The layout of this Supercenter has been based on the line of business that FLSmidth will be handling there, like repairs and reconstructions of equipment, spare parts distribution and maintenance contracts. The interesting side of this Supercenter is that it will have a training center that will allow FLSmidth to be a leader in technical education for Peruvian and Latin American professionals. Lucho mentioned that this new FLSmidth venture has raised a lot of interest in the market and customers are already contacting FLSmidth to prepare specialized training programs for their employees.
“Four years ago, customers were used to seeing us as equipment providers but now we have a new business approach as One Source for all our customer needs which has had a tremendous impact,”said Lucho.
“We have multiplied our sales of services by 14 times since 2008. We have developed more business opportunities for example in mill liners, flotation cells and thickener repairs, and plant shut down services. We have even created a new working group dedicated exclusively to shut down services because it is the most popular among our customers.”
Committed to education – Corporate Social Responsibility
As a customer service manager, Lucho has to be aware not only of the business needs of his customers, but also with the social needs of their surrounding communities. Peru is a country with marked differences among its inhabitants. Mining has brought wealth to the country, but towns around the mining areas sometimes do not share the prosperity which eventually may lead to social unrest. Social issues have become a critical aspect for the development of future projects.
FLSmidth has partnered with EnginZone due to their expertise in local needs and training, to do educational corporate social responsibility programmes that will have a direct impact in the well-being of the communities.
Behind the scenes
Photography and surf casting fishing are Lucho’s hobbies. His wife and children have adopted these hobbies too so they spend fun time together travelling to the highlands of Peru for fishing and taking beautiful pictures of the Andean landscape. It is mandatory for each member of his family to own a fishing pole and a camera.
