Mr. Thomas Schulz was appointed new Group Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of FLSmidth & Co. A/S as of 1 May 2013.

After 10 years as Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of FLSmidth & Co. A/S, Mr. Jørgen Huno Rasmussen, age 60, retired as of 1 May 2013. Mr. Thomas Schulz was appointed new Group Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of FLSmidth & Co. A/S and took up his new position on that day.

For Mr. Schulz, there was no doubt whether or not to take on the new role as Group CEO of FLSmidth. He is a mining engineer at heart and says that FLSmidth reflects everything he has been working with his entire professional career.

A mining engineer at heart

It’s important for me to meet people, visit them in their local environments and come to know the challenges they face and the demands they have. Only by being close to our customers are we able to really understand what their needs are and how we can accommodate these needs.
— Thomas Schulz Group Chief Executive Officer of FLSmidth & Co. A/S

Having grown up in one of the largest coal mining areas in Germany, FLSmidth's new Group CEO Mr. Schulz got acquainted with the mining industry at a very early age. Mr. Schulz's heritage from the German mining region formed the basis for his interest in the mining and minerals industries, and this interest has only grown over the years.
His academic knowledge within the field has developed over the course of his studies as well as through teaching and researching. In 1999, his studies culminated with a PhD dissertation in Mineral Mining and Quarrying.

In addition to this, Mr. Schulz has been working within the mining and construction business for the last 15 years. From 2005 to 2011, Mr. Schulz was based in Germany, Sweden and Singapore, respectively, as President of Construction and Senior Vice President of Mining and Construction at Sandvik. Most recently he held the position as President of Sandvik’s Construction business area.

A safety ambassador

"Safety is not a project, it's not a task, it's not an action—it's part of our daily life as is sleeping and eating," Mr. Schulz says. As he sees it, the industries FLSmidth operates in require us to live and breathe safety every day and everyone, not just managers, need to fully commit to the importance of safety.
"I want to make safety an inherent part of the FLSmidth culture. That is a key ambition of mine which I believe will make FLSmidth stronger in the future," Mr. Schulz concludes.

An ambitious team player

In Mr. Schulz's view, a company is a kind of family. And he admires the FLSmidth family: "FLSmidth has a strong heritage. It has great people who are loyal and who take responsibility—that is one of our key strengths which we can be proud of," he says. "Sure we are different throughout our global organization—both in terms of culture, language and our way of life—but it's our differences that make us strong together. Acknowledging our differences and leveraging the advantages that these differences provide us with as one company is truly a strength."

Mr. Schulz has high ambitions for FLSmidth, and that those ambitions will bring about great things, such as better performance, higher efficiencies, more innovations and greater customer relations. In his own words, “Ambitions create a mood where it feels like you can achieve everything—ambitions foster great achievements.”
